Frequently asked questions
What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling based martial art and combat sport, focusing on the control and submission of your opponent. Here at Milltown we teach beginners how to safely build skill, fitness and confidence – whether you’re training for self, defence or competition, we’ve got you covered!
Do I need experience to start?
Absolutely not! We welcome complete beginners! We also run 2/3 beginners courses each year to get you a jump start on your Jiu-Jitsu journey! Keep an eye on our socials for updates
What should I bring to my first class?
All you need is:
1) shorts/leggings and a t-shirt (we have plenty of Gi’s to borrow for your first few weeks if attending the gi class)
2) yourself!
Do I need to be fit or flexible to start?
Not at all! BJJ is great exercise and will increase your fitness and flexibility over time
What's the difference between Gi and NoGi?
The only difference between the two is the clothes you wear. In the Gi classes you wear a ‘Gi’ (uniform) the Gi increases the grips you can make and generally is a bit ‘slower’
NoGi you wear shorts and t-shirt or a ‘rashguard’ it is generally more fast paced due to the lack of grips. Both are great options! (we recommend training both!)
How often should I train as a beginner?
2-3 times a week is a perfect place to start
What does a typical class look like?
Warm-up → Technique → Drilling → (optional) live sparring.
